Jackson historian Maurice Imhoff is running for State Representative in the newly drawn 46th State House district spanning Jackson and Washtenaw Counties. At 20 years old, if elected Imhoff would be the youngest person ever to serve as State Representative, and the first African American elected to the state legislature from Jackson County.
Maurice Imhoff is an avid historian, with a career marshaling projects for the Michigan State Capitol Commission, the Civilian Conservation Corp Museum, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History and other noteworthy institutions. He currently serves as founder and President of the Jackson County Historical Society, where he leads research projects, educational initiatives, and historical marker placement through grants secured by the Michigan Humanities Council.
After a four year hiatus, Imhoff spearheaded the return of the Jackson Civil War Society’s Civil War Muster - one of the largest and longest running Civil War events in the Midwest, draws 25,000 to 30,000 people to the grounds of Cascades Park. Imhoff not only participates as a reenactor, but now serves as the Jackson Civil War Society’s new president.
In the Jackson community, Imhoff serves on the Advisory Board of the Jackson Salvation Army, Trustee of the Michigan Theatre of Jackson, and Fund Development Chair of the Jackson Young Professionals. Appointed by the Mayor at the age of 18, Imhoff became the youngest Commissioner in city history on the City of Jackson’s Historic District Commission and the Human Relations Commission.
In 2021, he was selected as one of Jackson Magazine’s “30 Under 30” - an award that showcases young professionals excelling in their careers and demonstrating strong community involvement.
Imhoff currently works as a Policy Associate for Michigan AFL-CIO Advocates, a non-profit organization advocating for policies, programs and projects that can bring economic justice to the workplace and social justice to communities across Michigan.
The 46th House District is an open, competitive seat composed of the City of Jackson, Blackman Township, parts of Summit Township, Leoni Township, parts of Grass Lake, Sylvan Township and the City of Chelsea.
